The Need Continues
Although the epidemic is subsiding it is clear that many needs will still remain. The cholera epidemic has highlighted the terrible reality of hygiene and sanitation in Haiti, which has caused great health problems to the nation even before this specific outbreak. The poor hygiene and limited portable water distribution would point favorably towards a potential unfortunate peak of cholera in the coming years which is now endemic across the whole country.
What We Are Doing
HHA, MSF, and The Ministry of Health in Haiti have undertaken a joint project to construct a long term centre for the treatment of diarrheal diseases at our site. This site will provide treatment for patients in Cap-Haitien (Haiti’s second largest city) and training for Government employees, and NGO private medical staff in the North. In the unfortunate event of another outbreak the centre will have the capacity to quickly develop into a 300 bed emergency unit.
More information about how this project will develop will be available soon.
