‘It is heartwarming to see how the Haiti Hospital Appeal empowers Haitians to care for their youngest and most vulnerable’ – Al Philpotts, recent traveler to Haiti

The Injustice:

Haiti has the highest infant mortality rate in the Western hemisphere.  The living conditions for children in much of Haiti are unbearable, and lives are often lost due to the most basic of illnesses/diseases.  Malnutrition (in Haiti, 1 in 10 children are acutely malnourished, and 1 in 5 underweight), Diarrhea and other preventable conditions place many children at great risk, with 165 deaths per 1,000 children under five.

Our Response:

Under the direction of our Haitian Medical Director, a highly respected Paediatrician in North Haiti, we’ve opened a new Paediatric unit which provides life saving care to the Northern regions.

The Paediatric unit is open 24/7 and provides inpatient and outpatient care to hundreds of children a month.  Our inpatient ward has 15 beds, providing care for babies, children and teenagers.  Our outpatient service provides general and specialised consultations, emergency support for trauma cases like road traffic accidents, and health education.  The hospital is also part of the Haitian Ministry of Health’s vaccination programme, and provides vaccinations to babies and children each month.  It also offers two nutritional programmes, the first for severly malnourished children, and the other in partnership with The World Food Programme, which assists vulnerable families with food supplements.
