‘Based on our experience, we, the Swiss Paraplegic Centre Nottwil and the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation have decided to continue our engagement with the Haiti Hospital Appeal because we are convinced that we have found the right partner to establish the concept of rehabilitation medicine for a better future of the Haitian spinal injured people.’

Community Based Follow-Up

Whilst inpatient rehabilitation is vitally important, so too is community outreach.  There are many individuals across North Haiti who are too poor or physically disabled to access our facility.  There are also individuals once discharged from hospital who will need community based follow up.

What We Are Doing

Our outreach team will visit high-risk patients and continue offering them medical and physiotherapy support.  They will also evaluate the living conditions of people with disabilities and make recommendations of how the persons quality of life can be improved through simple, cost effective modifications.

Whilst in the community the team will also identify patients who aren’t in need of medical support, but who could value basic equipment.  For instance, many disabled people are house bound in Haiti because they don’t have an appropriate wheel chair.

Children’s Disability Outreach Work

This work will also be undertaken with our Children’s Disability Outreach work.  Together they will work with community leaders and groups to advocate for disability rights, and challenge the stigma associated with people who have disabilities.

With only 2% of people with disabilities reached with appropriate care in the developing world, a lot needs to be done.  Please join with us today and help make a life changing difference to some of the worlds most vulnerable people.
